Australian Daily Prayer

4th Friday of Epiphany

1
Through Christ let us offer up a sacrifice of praise to God,
the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.
Hebrews 13:15
Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.
2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of God's Grace
We have complete freedom:
to go into the most holy place by means of the death of Jesus
He opened for us a new way, a living way:
through the curtain, through his own body.
Since we have a great high priest
set over the household of God:
let us draw near with a sincere heart and a sure faith,
With hearts that have been made clean
from a guilty conscience:
and bodies washed with pure water.
Hebrews 10:19-22
3 The Opening Prayer
The night has passed and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind.
Silence may be kept
As we rejoice in the gift of this new day,
so may the light of your presence, O God,
set our hearts on fire with love for you;
now and for ever. Amen.
4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each.
1  Alleluia.
      Give praise, you servants of the Lord,
   O praise the name of the Lord.
2  Blessed be the name of the Lord,
   from this time forth and for evermore.
3  From the rising of the sun to its setting
   let the name of the Lord be praised.
4  The Lord is high above all nations
   and his glory above the heavens.
5  Who is like the Lord our God,
      that has his throne so high,
   yet humbles himself to behold
      the things of heaven and earth?
6  He raises the poor from the dust
   and lifts the needy from the ashes,
7  To set them with princes,
   with the princes of his people.
8  He gives the barren woman a place in the house
   and makes her a joyful mother of children.
      Alleluia.
1  Not to us, Lord, not to us,
      but to your name give the glory,
   for the sake of your loving mercy and truth.
2  Why should the nations say,
   ‘Where is now their God?’
3  As for our God, he is in heaven;
   he does whatever he pleases.
4  Their idols are silver and gold,
   the work of human hands.
5  They have mouths, but cannot speak;
   eyes have they, but cannot see;
6  They have ears, but cannot hear;
   noses have they, but cannot smell;
7  They have hands, but cannot feel;
      feet have they, but cannot walk;
   not a whisper do they make from their throats.
8  Those who make them shall become like them
   and so will all who put their trust in them.
9  But you, Israel, put your trust in the Lord;
   he is their help and their shield.
10  House of Aaron, trust in the Lord;
   he is their help and their shield.
11  You that fear the Lord, trust in the Lord;
   he is their help and their shield.
12  The Lord has been mindful of us and he will bless us;
   may he bless the house of Israel;
      may he bless the house of Aaron;
13  May he bless those who fear the Lord,
   both small and great together.
14  May the Lord increase you more and more,
   you and your children after you.
15  May you be blest by the Lord,
   the maker of heaven and earth.
16  The heavens are the heavens of the Lord,
   but the earth he has entrusted to his children.
17  The dead do not praise the Lord,
   nor those gone down into silence;
18  But we will bless the Lord,
   from this time forth for evermore.
      Alleluia.
5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
Holy God, through your beloved Son you reconciled all things to yourself, making peace by the blood of his cross: fill us and those for whom we pray with your peace and joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed

Genesis 22:1–19 (Listen)

The Sacrifice of Isaac

22:1 After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy1 will go over there and worship and come again to you.” And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together.

When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. 11 But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 12 He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.” 13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called the name of that place, “The LORD will provide”;2 as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the LORD it shall be provided.”3

15 And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven 16 and said, “By myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his4 enemies, 18 and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.” 19 So Abraham returned to his young men, and they arose and went together to Beersheba. And Abraham lived at Beersheba.

Matthew 28:1–15 (Listen)

The Resurrection

28:1 Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he1 lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.” So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”

The Report of the Guard

11 While they were going, behold, some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all that had taken place. 12 And when they had assembled with the elders and taken counsel, they gave a sufficient sum of money to the soldiers 13 and said, “Tell people, ‘His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep.’ 14 And if this comes to the governor’s ears, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” 15 So they took the money and did as they were directed. And this story has been spread among the Jews to this day.

7 The Canticle, Saviour of the World
Jesus, Saviour of the world,
come to us in your mercy:
we look to you to save and help us.
By your cross and your life laid down,
you set your people free:
we look to you to save and help us.
When they were ready to perish,
you saved your disciples:
we looked to you to come to our help.
In the greatness of your mercy,
loose us from our chains:
forgive the sins of all your people.
Make yourself known as our saviour
and mighty deliverer:
save and help us that we may praise you.
come now and dwell with us, Lord Christ Jesus:
hear our prayers and be with us always.
And when you come in your glory:
make us to be one with you
and to share the life of your kingdom.
8 The Apostles' Creed may be said
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Ephesians 2:17
Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.
2 The Opening Canticle, The Lord's Servant
He was despised; he was rejected:
a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief.
As one from whom people hide their faces:
he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Ours were the sufferings he bore:
ours the torments he endured,
While we thought he was being punished:
struck by God and brought low.
He was pierced for our sins:
bruised for no fault but ours.
His punishment has won our peace:
and by his wounds we are healed.
We had all strayed like sheep:
all taking our own way;
But the Lord laid on him:
the guilt of us all.
Isaiah 53:3-6
3 The Opening Prayer
The day is now passed and the night is at hand.
Let us pray with one heart and mind.
Silence may be kept
Father of lights, receive the prayer and praise we offer you as our evening sacrifice; make us a light for all the world, delivered by your goodness from all the works of darkness; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen.
4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each
1  Alleluia.
      Praise the Lord, O my soul:
      while I live will I praise the Lord;
   as long as I have any being,
      I will sing praises to my God.
2  Put not your trust in princes,
      nor in any human power,
   for there is no help in them.
3  When their breath goes forth, they return to the earth;
   on that day all their thoughts perish.
4  Happy are those who have the God of Jacob for their help,
   whose hope is in the Lord their God;
5  Who made heaven and earth,
      the sea and all that is in them;
   who keeps his promise for ever;
6  Who gives justice to those that suffer wrong
   and bread to those who hunger.
7  The Lord looses those that are bound;
   the Lord opens the eyes of the blind;
8  The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down;
   the Lord loves the righteous;
9  The Lord watches over the stranger in the land;
      he upholds the orphan and widow;
   but the way of the wicked he turns upside down.
10  The Lord shall reign for ever,
   your God, O Zion, throughout all generations.
      Alleluia.
1  Alleluia.
      How good it is to make music for our God,
   how joyful to honour him with praise.
2  The Lord builds up Jerusalem
   and gathers together the outcasts of Israel.
3  He heals the brokenhearted
   and binds up all their wounds.
4  He counts the number of the stars
   and calls them all by their names.
5  Great is our Lord and mighty in power;
   his wisdom is beyond all telling.
6  The Lord lifts up the poor,
   but casts down the wicked to the ground.
7  Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving;
   make music to our God upon the lyre;
8  Who covers the heavens with clouds
   and prepares rain for the earth;
9  Who makes grass to grow upon the mountains
   and green plants to serve our needs.
10  He gives the beasts their food
   and the young ravens when they cry.
11  He takes no pleasure in the power of a horse,
   no delight in human strength;
12  But the Lord delights in those who fear him,
   who put their trust in his steadfast love.
13  Sing praise to the Lord, O Jerusalem;
   praise your God, O Zion;
14  For he has strengthened the bars of your gates
   and has blest your children within you.
15  He has established peace in your borders
   and satisfies you with the finest wheat.
16  He sends forth his command to the earth
   and his word runs very swiftly.
17  He gives snow like wool
   and scatters the hoarfrost like ashes.
18  He casts down his hailstones like morsels of bread;
   who can endure his frost?
19  He sends forth his word and melts them;
   he blows with his wind and the waters flow.
20  He declares his word to Jacob,
   his statutes and judgements to Israel.
21  He has not dealt so with any other nation;
   they do not know his laws.
      Alleluia.
5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
Holy Spirit, sanctifier, cleans us from all hypocrisy, unite us to one another in the bonds of peace and love, and confirm us in holiness, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hosea 13:1–14 (Listen)

The Lord’s Relentless Judgment on Israel

13:1   When Ephraim spoke, there was trembling;
    he was exalted in Israel,
    but he incurred guilt through Baal and died.
  And now they sin more and more,
    and make for themselves metal images,
  idols skillfully made of their silver,
    all of them the work of craftsmen.
  It is said of them,
    “Those who offer human sacrifice kiss calves!”
  Therefore they shall be like the morning mist
    or like the dew that goes early away,
  like the chaff that swirls from the threshing floor
    or like smoke from a window.
  But I am the LORD your God
    from the land of Egypt;
  you know no God but me,
    and besides me there is no savior.
  It was I who knew you in the wilderness,
    in the land of drought;
  but when they had grazed,1 they became full,
    they were filled, and their heart was lifted up;
    therefore they forgot me.
  So I am to them like a lion;
    like a leopard I will lurk beside the way.
  I will fall upon them like a bear robbed of her cubs;
    I will tear open their breast,
  and there I will devour them like a lion,
    as a wild beast would rip them open.
  He destroys2 you, O Israel,
    for you are against me, against your helper.
10   Where now is your king, to save you in all your cities?
    Where are all your rulers—
  those of whom you said,
    “Give me a king and princes”?
11   I gave you a king in my anger,
    and I took him away in my wrath.
12   The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up;
    his sin is kept in store.
13   The pangs of childbirth come for him,
    but he is an unwise son,
  for at the right time he does not present himself
    at the opening of the womb.
14   I shall ransom them from the power of Sheol;
    I shall redeem them from Death.3
  O Death, where are your plagues?
    O Sheol, where is your sting?
    Compassion is hidden from my eyes.

and by your blood you ransomed for God
saints from every tribe and language and nation.

You have made them to be a kingdom and priests serving our God:
and they will reign with you on earth.
To the One who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
